How did you get into your business? What is your background?

I actually started as a musician who wanted to do documentaries on tradition music and cultural arts. That led me to doing work with training films, church films, and corporate work. I continued to do my small documentaries but they led me to live productions and I have stayed involved with that

Q   How did you learn what you do?

I worked to market my own skills in the beginning mainly working with super 8 and 16-millimeter film. We did ruff video editing and film editing in those days (late 60's), but even then video could be used in most cases for a cost saving of 80% in most cases or better. I would say most of our training then was a hands on experience

Is it a male dominated field?

Most of the people working then where men. But the women that where involved with a project usually where very talented and above average in my opinion. Now it is very common to work with many women in the field.

What is the Personality, the type of person, in video editing:

I find many types of people working in video editing. Some are very technical, others are artistic, and others are just down right anal or drunk.

Do you enjoy video editing?

I have to say it can be tiring to edit as it can take so long sometimes to get what you want and timing right, but I have found over many a cold beer  (and I do not really drink) that it can be quite fun.

Do you see different fields in editing opening up? Where do you see the industry is heading?

The truth of it with Internet, and so much subject matter to cover in this world, there is no limit to the need of people who are good at editing and creating good videos. Definitely the whole industry is headed to everything digital and computers and software are becoming ever more affordable for even home video's. Everyone is a moviemaker.

Can you recommend to a person interested in Digital Video Editing pertaining to software, hardware, classes, magazines, e-zines, user groups, or books?

I would say as far as software, books, magazines, and television programs all have given me input to knew technical aspects and changes in the industry. I am always working on programs that we actually get input and so adding ideas with special lighting and av effects. The visual is so important now to sell with as everyone has to be shocked into very impressive presentations for people to be impressed. The need to do programs with information can only reach the masses best in video or film.

Is there anything that you came upon during your career that you found interesting and wanted to pursue?

Having other investments in life now I have stock in a 3D software with virtual worlds on the Internet and virtual communities all over are sharing there video in the 3d worlds. The usage is unlimited and the subjects to work with. It is an unlimited field of opportunity. I never say no to any kind of project. I subcontract companies to do what I cannot get done with my own crew or equipment. I believe there is no limit as I have done TV, Olympics, and many national events.

Is there anything else you can tell me or let me in on? Any information would help?

I have spent time with my best friend Thom Cavin. He does entertainment tonight in Nashville and several other shows. I have watched them do the editing for the RockFest Atlanta. They have this director who does the stuff that gets aired and was there while he did the final cuts. It is super watching a pro like that. He has pieces every week and they get to go all over the country for interviews Thom Cavin and he would surely be happy to talk to you about it. You ever go to Nashville he would let you see what they do. Thom started by working with channel 12 here and being in the entertainment business. He has always just been part of entertainment and great sells person. He plays music. He is on the Key Largo song playing bass with Berdie Higgins. he worked in television and I worked with him doing a recording studio. He ran the studio for Brent Mills of Olan Mills. Olan's son.... I worked heading up sells for outside contracts to produce shows there for about 4 years. He likes it a lot and I did it some when working the studio. we had editing gear for video. but did not do digital. He does though and loves it. It was neat watching them do the Rockfest. I talked him into buying a good recorder for sound. That would work for video editing. He immediately got lots of jobs and moved on to interviews and he had previous experience at the TV station with cameras. I had done film editing for years. Have tons of films that I shot from the 60's on of festivals and artist. I did several corporation films like a nurse's training film etc. I did many slide shows and documentaries. That is what got me going. I played music and thought that I knew to many exceptional people to not film it and share with others. Next thing my music friends ask me to help make things happen. I did! I worked on getting the Olympics for almost 4 years before it happened but really hard the year before it went down. It was something I felt I was going to do. But it is still a shock when you know you got it.
